 The History

Indianapolis Motor Speedway has existed since 1909, and is the original "Speedway," the first racing facility to incorporate the word into its name.

With a permanent seating capacity for more than 250,000-plus people and infield seating that raises capacity to an approximate 400,000, it is the largest and highest-capacity sporting facility in history.

August 6, 1994- Jeff Gordon, then aged twenty-three, wins the first Sprint Cup Series race at Indianapolis. This win set Gordon as the youngest race winner at the track.

August 3, 1997-Closest Margin Of Victory: Ricky Rudd over Bobby Labonte by 0.183 seconds.

August 4th, 2002- Bill Elliott becomes the oldest winner at Indy, 46 years, 9 months, 27 days.
